Everyone Should Learn a Little about Law

While lawyers and judges are the ultimate legal experts, of course, I believe that every citizen should take the time to learn a little about law for several reasons. First, it is important to know your rights, and knowing them can come in handy if anyone ever accuses you of a crime you didn't commit or threatens you legally in another other way. Second, learning about your local, state, and federal laws can help you act as a better citizen. When election time comes around, you can then truly understand ever change in law being proposed by a candidate and whether it benefits society or not. I plan to share posts about law topics explained in plain English on my new blog, so you can come back often to sharpen your legal knowledge!

5 Transportation Options After A DWI

Kaylee Wells

If you have been charged with a DWI, then you may be facing a suspension of your license. This can affect your ability to get to and from work and also negatively impact your personal life. However, you do have several transportation options available.

Continue Driving

Being arrested for a DWI does not mean that you are automatically guilty of a DWI, however, in most states, your license will be automatically suspended a few days after your arrest if you don't get a lawyer from a firm like Hornthal Riley Ellis & Maland LLP to contact the Department of Motor Vehicles about your case. If your lawyer does contact the DMV, they can request an administrative hearing regarding the suspension of your license.

In many states, you will be allowed to continue driving until your administrative hearing takes place, which may be months after your arrest. Additionally, if your administrative case takes place after your court case, and your lawyer manages to get the charges against you dropped, you may not lose your driving privileges at all.

Before your administrative hearing, you should create an alternative transportation plan, in case your license does get suspended.

Join a Carpool

There are many benefits to carpooling, including a more productive commute and reduced environmental impacts. It is likely that there are already carpool programs in your area, but if you live in a rural area without carpool options, you could consider starting one through your work or neighborhood.

It is important that you do not discuss your current DWI investigation with anyone except your lawyer, as you could suffer unnecessary negative social and professional consequences. For this reason, you should concentrate on the benefits that a carpool provides to the entire community instead of revealing why you need one. This can actually show you taking initiative and leading projects, benefiting your reputation.

While you are setting up the carpool, you may need to rely on other methods of transportation.

Take Up Cycling

Cycling can provide many health benefits as well as give you transportation while you do not have your license. Many companies even offer financial incentives for employees who bike to work regularly.

If you live a long distance from your work, you may find that it takes some time to build up the endurance to commute using a cycle. However, you may be surprised by how short your commute feels after a month of practice. It is important to select a durable, comfortable bicycle and prepare yourself for adverse weather with strong riding skills and appropriate gear

Cycling also allows you to claim health reasons for your change of transportation as opposed to discussing your DWI with colleagues or friends, if they ask.

Utilize Public Transportation

Although not all areas in the United States have decent public transportation, there are several cities that offer a strong network of 24-hour service that can get you where you need to be without much hassle. If you live in the suburbs and have the option to rent an apartment in the city for the duration of your suspension, you may find that this allows you to get by using public transportation and the occasional private transportation to your long-term home.

Work From Home More Often

Modern technology allows Americans to work from remote locations without a negative impact on their company. You may be able to convince your boss that you desire better work-life integration and ask to work from home a couple of days each week, reducing the number of times you have to figure our transportation to the office. Again, this can be done without revealing your current DWI arrest.

When you are charged with a DWI, it is important to create a transportation plan that allows you to fulfill your commitments and prevent long-term damage to your life.
