Everyone Should Learn a Little about Law

While lawyers and judges are the ultimate legal experts, of course, I believe that every citizen should take the time to learn a little about law for several reasons. First, it is important to know your rights, and knowing them can come in handy if anyone ever accuses you of a crime you didn't commit or threatens you legally in another other way. Second, learning about your local, state, and federal laws can help you act as a better citizen. When election time comes around, you can then truly understand ever change in law being proposed by a candidate and whether it benefits society or not. I plan to share posts about law topics explained in plain English on my new blog, so you can come back often to sharpen your legal knowledge!

Financial Benefits Of Hiring A DUI Lawyer

Kaylee Wells

If you are apprehended for a DUI, you will experience both emotional and financial distress. Many people wrongly assume that pleading guilty to a DUI case is the quickest solution. You may also be apprehensive about the costs of hiring an attorney.

However, pleading guilty to the charge will result in fines and other costs that cannot compare to a litigator's fees.  DUI attorney will save you money by lodging a solid defense that serves your interests.

The Costs of Not Hiring a DUI Lawyer

The costs of not getting legal representation to fight a DUI charge can be steep. These costs include:

Fines and Court Costs

A DUI conviction will likely result in a fine. These fines vary between states, and they typically average at $1,100. You can pay thousands of dollars for subsequent convictions. You will also pay additional fees to facilitate the court's work on your case, including fees for probation and sentencing.

Drug Education and Treatment

If you are convicted, you may be expected to enroll in a drug education program. The court will determine the period you will spend on the course based on how high your BAC was. Programs may range from online classes to months of group counseling, which you will pay for.

Community Service Fees

If you must complete community service, you will pay supervision fees. Additionally, you may have to pay for random alcohol screenings.

Ignition Interlock Device

Some courts may mandate you to equip your car with an Ignition Interlock Device (IID). Once you breathe into the device, your vehicle will not start if it registers any alcohol content. You will pay the costs of installing and maintaining the IID.

Increase in Insurance Premiums

Increased insurance premiums are among the most burdensome DUI costs. Most insurance firms will hike your premiums after a DUI conviction, costing you hundreds to thousands of dollars annually. The rates will typically last between three to five years

Job Losses

A DUI can affect your career and make you lose out on job opportunities. What's more, you may lose your job if you spend too much time in court or jail.

A DUI Lawyer will Save You Money

A skilled DUI lawyer will pursue all avenues for your defense. Once the court finds you are not guilty, you will not have to pay fines, penalties, or related costs. If your lawyer negotiates a plea agreement, your fines will be significantly reduced. Although hiring a DUI attorney is an upfront investment, you will save thousands of dollars in the long run.
